IRRIGATION ENGINEERING II

COURSE AIM

The purpose of this course is to introduce the trainees to irrigation and drainage engineering.  It endeavors to give the historical development of irrigation, the importance of irrigation and the future of irrigation in Kenya. It also intends to introduce the learners to the various types of irrigation, methods and systems of irrigation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduction and definitions. Irrigation policy and legal framework.Irrigation flagship projects. Importance of irrigation. History of irrigation, irrigation water sources (rivers, lakes, earthen and rock fill dams) spillways. Hydrology and irrigation planning. Soil-plant-water relationships. Measurement of irrigation water. Water conveyance and control structures. Types of irrigation, irrigation methods and systems of irrigation. Salinity and alkalinity in irrigated soils.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

By the end of the course, the trainee should be able to:

·         Appreciate the importance of irrigation.

·         Identify various irrigation water sources, water abstraction, measurement, conveyance and control structures.
